5 Essential Golf Etiquette Tips For Beginners

golf etiquetteGolf. There's nothing quite like it. But if you are new to golf, it can be quite daunting when you first start, and especially on your first few visits to your golf course.

The truth is that golf can be a wonderful, relaxing hobby and a great way to un-wind. But it is also important to ensure that you act in a way that allows other course users to enjoy themselves and vice versa.

So here are the top 5 golfing etiquette tips for new golfers, so that you can't rest assured that you and everyone around you is able to get the maximum enjoyment out of their game.

1. Take the equipment you need.

You are generally allowed up to a maximum of 14 clubs on most golf courses. Make sure before you get started that you have a good selection for the course. Borrowing clubs from your partners will slow down the game for everyone and is usually not allowed.

By the same token, make sure to take plenty of spare balls. You are probably going to lose plenty during your first few games anyway.

2. Don't be late.

If you have the option to book a tee time, it is always a good idea to do so. You should always aim to be early, as being late will slow down the game for your group and many groups after you. Worse still, if you are late you may miss your spot altogether.

3. Know the dress code.

Many golf courses have strict dress codes. So if you are visiting for the first time, it is worth calling the club and checking what rules they have. This is just good practice and may save embarrasment and a ruined day.

This is especially true in popular golfing resorts. Many beginners make the mistake of assuming that when you are on holiday you can dress down a little - make sure you know the rules and your golfing holidays are sure to go without a hitch.

4. Play it as it lies.

This is a common mistake for beginners, but it is very bad etiquette. The rules of golf are very clear, in almost all circumstances you may not move or touch your ball.

Wherever or however your ball comes to rest, that is how you should play it. It can be very tempting to just nudge it along a bit, but if you want to be serious at the game, this is one you have to stick to.

5. Out of bounds.

If your first stroke results in your ball going out of bounds or you simply can't find it you should add one stroke and tee off again. In practice though, this is time consuming and can delay groups who are behind you.

The solution is that if you think your ball may have gone out of bounds, you should tee off again with a second ball - a provisional ball. If you later find your first ball and it is in bounds you can ignore the provisional and play as normal.
