RALEIGH, N.C. – April 1, 2011 – DIVOT.com announced the release of the first ever origami golf ball, to be sold on its website today. Traditionally known as a daily deal website catering to golfers, the origami golf ball marks DIVOT.com's first foray into new product development.
The ball itself ships as what looks like a normal piece of paper. But embedded micro-folding technology allows golfers to bypass the series of precise folds which is typically required in creating origami objects.
"Our new micro-folding technology is remarkable," said Mark Divotmann, Principal Engineer and the designer of the origami golf ball. "The golfer simply crumples the paper, and the micro-folding technology then redirects the energy from that movement into the 8,493 precise micro-folds which allows the paper to transform into a high-performance golf ball."
"We're really excited about this technology," DIVOT.com CEO, Mark Divotmann, said. "I can say in all earnestness that our origami golf ball represents a leap in golf ball technology unseen for decades. We're not talking just about fractional performance boosts like we've seen from multi-core advances over the last century. We're talking fundamental, game-changing technology. The scale of the technological improvement is more comparable to the implementation of dimples. It's really quite magical. Without question, a next generation device."
The ball is intended to allow golfers ready access to a spare ball at any time, while taking up a fraction of the space. Moreover, its paper-like surface can be used as paper for writing notes or as a scorecard, all without affecting the micro-fold technology or the performance of the ball after it's been transformed.
